Project Requirement

  • High port density to connect a wide range of devices
  • Robust and reliable connections in harsh environments
  • IEC61850 compliance and long-haul data transmission
  • Network redundancy

Solution

Location in Haryana, India, the IMT MANESAR Industrial Area is home to many large multinational companies, such as Maruti Suzuki, Jaquar, and Toshiba Eco City. Two power companies wanted to build an Ethernet network for the SCADA system of their substations in this area. After thorough evaluation, the companies decided to deploy ORing's industrial Ethernet switches across the industrial area.

The power substation is divided into 6 power sectors and the network system adopts Oring's RGS-P9000-HV, IGS-P9164GC-HV, IGS-P9812GP-HV and IES-P3073GC-HV Ethernet switches, all comply with the IEC61850 standard as required by substations. The industrial-grade design of these switches enables them to work in harsh environments. In addition, most of them are equipped with Gigabit and Fiber ports to ensure large bandwidth and long-haul data transmission. Due to the importance of uninterrupted operations, the switches are deployed in a ring topology to provide network redundancy. With ORing’s proprietary redundancy protocol, the network can recover from failures in less than < 10ms. The self-healing ability prevents mission-critical applications from network interruptions or temporary malfunctions.

Each sector consists of 4 to 5 RGS-P9000-HV switches to transmit the data from Bay-level nodes to the station through the IGS-P9164GC-HV. The modular design of the RGS-P9000-HV gives the companies a high level of flexibility when planning networks as well as high port density. These switches are connected to the control center through ORing’s O-chain topology to protect the network from interruption. As the IGS-P9164GC provides four optical fiber ports with SC connector, data can be transmitted to the remote control center rapidly and easily. At the control center, two IGS-P9812GP-HV are deployed which communicate with field-site switches via the O-chain topology. A redundant ring using the RSTP protocol is formed to protect the network from failure. Furthermore, the RMUs (Remote Monitoring Unit) are connected with the IES-2042FX-SS-SC which transfers RMU data to upper level switches. The network is also formed in O-Ring topology for network redundancy.
