Project Introduction

Location: Shanghai,China

Project Name: Shanghai Metro Vehicle Maintenance Facility

Products Deployed: IAP-W522+

Project Requirement

Shanghai Metro Vehicle 1110 1

  • A facility-wide wireless network to achieve real-time data transmission
  • Bi-directional data transmission, allowing the train and control center to send and receive data to and from each other
  • Optimization of transmission routes due to cabling difficulty
  • Industrial-grade design for harsh environmental conditions

Solution

As a vehicle depot may contain more than one train on the same track, a wireless client is placed in the locomotives on both end of the train with wireless access points installed along the track to provide wireless coverage for the entire depot. The wireless network is connected to the communications network of the control center. When a train arrives at the vehicle depot, the wireless clients in the train will communicate with a nearby wireless AP, transmitting on-board data to the depot via the wireless network.

Ground staff can then check train information such as system errors, incident details, equipment, and event dates. They can also connect to a target train wirelessly to request or send data, keeping the driver notified of any situations during train operation.

A total of 16 wireless APs provided by ORing have been installed along the track. The industrial-grade IAP-W522+ is an outdoor IEEE 802.11a/n AP with an IP67 casing and two RJ45 Ethernet ports. In the locomotives of the train, a customized IEEE 802.11a/b/g wireless client has been installed. The compact size of the wireless client enables it to fit into the small space in the car. Both the APs and wireless clients can use external antennas to achieve long-haul data transmission.

Since all data in the vehicle depot is transmitted via the wireless network, data between the train and track-side APs is forwarded by a nearby AP until it reaches the control center. As the forwarding will cause data packets to pil up, leading to a reduction in bandwidth availability, ORing's engineers have optimized the transmission routes between track-side APs. With the use of different types of antennas (including enhanced directional and omnidirectional antennas), data can be transmitted in light with original configurations, thus eliminating the problem of bandwidth unavailability.
