Project Introduction

Location: US

Project Name: US Medical Equipment Maker Integrates ORing Switch in Surgical Equipment Project

Products Deployed: IGS-3032GC

Project Requirement

● Resistance to harsh conditions
● Automatic synchronization of system clocks throughout a computer network
● Reliable data communications in a cost-effective way

Solution

A US medical equipment manufacturer wanted to integrate a reliable network device into its surgical navigation systems to equip them with networking ability, allowing them to transmit data seamlessly and securely. Given that the surgical navigation systems will be used in high temperature environments, the network device must be able to withstand high heat. Time synchronization was another key concern for the manufacturer when selecting the right network device because it is essential for scheduling medical staff properly and efficiently, which in turn improves the quality of healthcare and even saves more lives. As the network device needs to be connected with APs that transmit data to the control center, fiber optic connectivity is also required. After thorough evaluations based on these considerations, the manufacturer decided to install ORing’s IGS-3032GC industrial Ethernet switch inside the medical equipment.

The manufacturer installed an IGS-3032GC industrial Ethernet switch in each of its 500 surgical navigation systems. The switch comes with three copper ports and two fiber ports in SFP mode, all providing Gigabit speed. As a result, medical data, especially bandwidth-hungry video and image data, can be transmitted to the APs without delays. The switch also supports PTP client, a protocol used to synchronize clocks in a network. With PTP support, medical staff can correctly clock their time to clock in for their shifts on time, ensure accurate administration of medication, and conduct surgical procedures properly. After collecting the data, the IGS-3032GC will transmit data to an AP via fiber connection where the data is sent to the control center over wireless network. As the switch supports a variety of security features such as HTTPS/SSH, TACACS+, and 802.1x authentication, the manufacturer can be rest assured that data transmission is protected.
