Project Introduction

Location: South Africa

Project Name: IP Surveillance System for Gold Mining Company in South Africa

Products Deployed: IGPS-9084GP-LA、RGPS-92222GCP-NP-LP

Gold mining has played a significant role in the economy of South Africa for more than a century. The country was once the largest producer of gold in the world and it still ranks as one of the top gold producing countries globally. Even today, the industry still plays an important role in the country's economy, accounting for around 8% of South Africa's GDP in 2020 and is a major source of employment in this country.

As mining operations are often located in remote areas, mining companies are prone to various risks such as theft of assets, intrusion of criminal miners (Zama-Zamas), personal safety, and environment protection. That’s why a mining company decided to deploy an Ethernet network at its mining site to connect with its IP surveillance system to mitigate these risks.

Project Requirement

  • Sufficient bandwidth to ensure smooth data transmission
  • Rugged design to cope with hot weather
  • Large number of ports to support all IP cameras

Solution

Taking its distributor’s advice, the client deployed ORing’s industrial Ethernet networking solutions at its mining site. The solutions are deployed in two parts including the perimeter and the entire site.

For perimeter surveillance, ORing's industrial Ethernet switches IGPS-9084GP-LA and RGPS-92222GCP-NP-LP were installed which feature Gigabit capacity to make sure video data from the IP cameras is transmitted without delays or data loss. As the switches are equipped with PoE support, they can simplify installation, reduce costs, and provide intelligent power management capabilities that ensure reliable operation of the surveillance system. In addition, the ruggedized design such as a wide temperature range and dust-proof rating can withstand harsh environmental conditions. The fiber optic support in the form of combo port also allows for long-distance data transmission as some of the cameras and other surveillance equipment in this large mining site are located far apart. As the IGPS-9084GP-LA offers 12 ports and RGPS-92222GCP-NP-LP offers up to 26 ports, the switches can support connections with the large number of cameras on the site.

In other places of the mining site, two more models of industrial Ethernet switches from ORing were installed to provide reliable and robust connectivity throughout the site. The IGPS-1042GPA is a slim type unmanaged switch and the RGS-9168GCP is a rackmount switch with 16 Gigabit combo ports and 8 SFP ports. With ORing's solution, the mining company can ensure that their operations are safe and secure, and their assets are protected.
