Since Taipei Computer Association (TCA) organized the "5G Smart Pole Standard Promotion Alliance" in March 2021, the industry members have been committed to promoting the development of Taiwan's 5G smart application related fields in order to seize the global NTD 3.4 trillion relevant output values and to participate in the formulation of standards in AI+IoT related fields. The alliance completed the formulation of the first version of the 5G smart pole industry technical specifications in September 2021.
Based on the “Taipei Smart City Industry Field Pilot Program” formulated by the Department of Information Technology of Taipei City Government and managed by the Taipei Smart City Project Management Office, the construction of 5G smart pole POC trial field is now well-established on the Songzhi road section of the east square behind the Taipei City Hall Building. This 1-year trial is expected to be the first milestone in further optimizing industrial technical specifications. As a member of the 5G Smart Pole Standard Promotion Alliance, ORing is honored to take part in the launch of the 5G smart pole trial field POC (Proof of Concept). ORing's smart streetlight controllers and PoE switches have been adopted in the POC which is expected to facilitate future revision of technical specifications, especially for software-hardware integration.
The POC is unprecedented in Taiwan in four aspects. Firstly, it is the first 5G smart pole combined with 5G Sub-6 / mmWave communication built at a crowded urbane area in Taiwan. Secondly, it's the world's first 5G smart pole designed and built by multiple telecoms. Thirdly, it is the first POC built with 5G Backhaul function. In an accident such as an interruption of the fixed-line fiber optic connection, the base station can still transmit information through the mobile network. Fourthly, it is the first uses the 802.11ad technology to realize wireless data mutual transmission between smart poles.
This POC trial field consists of 1 main pole, 2 auxiliary poles and 1 shared circuit control box. A special industrial design gives this 10 meters' smart pole a creative appearance. It also includes 5G smart cell and mmWave networks, electric vehicle charging sockets, combined AI and edge computing controlling LED warning lights, smart street lighting, technology-assisted law enforcement function, traffic monitoring, environmental climate detection, road flooding detection, digital signage and other intelligent applications and solutions required for the smart city development. It fully demonstrates that 5G smart poles will play the role as “neural units” in the construction of a smart city. The 5G smart pole field trial can be planned, constructed and launched within 3 months because the nearly 50 industrial members had worked together to make it happen.
From traditional street light to the development of 5G smart pole, the connotation of the word “smart” is to interconnect many applications and functions, accomplishing from an imagination into a tangible reality. Through the construction of smart cities, the application of 5G smart poles will provide a safer environment and a convenient life. The aesthetic design of the pole reconciles the color of a city, allowing its residents enjoy the urban beauty. As a result, 5G smart pole can be interpreted as a creation of application synthesis and urban arts.
The alliance hopes to encourage the government to invest resources to jointly promote the applications so as to accelerate the development of 5G smart pole and eventually benefit in life, also allowing the industry to grasp the global business opportunities in time. Furthermore, relevant government departments can assist the alliance to complete important technical standards so that we can bridge Taiwan's IT industry with international standards.
